A difficult 2 day hike to the crater of Santiaguito – the most active volcano in Guatemala, camping overnight to see the early morning explosions
You need to bring: good hiking gear – shoes, plenty of warm clothing, big backpack (50-60 + 10-15 liters) as you help carry everything
- Most active and dangerous Volcano in Guatemala
- Altitude: 2510 meters
- Formed in 1902 by the explosion from Santa Maria
- Last biggest explosion: 29th July 1922 (which started its continual gas explosions)
- Time to climb: 6 hours
- Trail length: approx. 7 Km
- Location: Southwest, department of Quetzaltenango
We leave Quetzaltenango at about 8am. The trail starts at 2400 meters, the first part being the same gentle trail as to the mirador. We then descend down to 1900m and then up to 2500m where the encampment is, as close as is possibly safe to the crater. Day 2 we watch the explosions early morning (when they’re most active) from the campsite and then return. The return hike (along the same trail) takes about 8 hours, arriving back to Quetzaltenango about 3pm.
Included: Guide, all transport, 4 liters water, camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, mats), 3 meals (from lunch day 1 to breakfast day 2)
